1. Definitions

In these Terms and Conditions:

• "Service" refers to car rental services provided by Basalt
• "User" or "Renter" refers to individuals or entities renting vehicles from Basalt
• "We," "Us," "Our" refers to Basalt, the car rental service provider
• "Vehicle" refers to any car, SUV, or other transport provided under rental agreement
• "Agreement" refers to the binding rental contract between Basalt and the Renter

2. Acceptance of Terms

By booking or using Basalt's rental services, submitting an inquiry, or accessing our website, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use our services.

These terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and Basalt. Renters must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license to enter into this agreement.

3. Service Description

Basalt provides premium car rental services in Taiwan, specializing in vehicles suited for geological exploration, mountain roads, and extended travel. Services include:

• Day, multi-day, and weekly vehicle rental packages
• Comprehensive insurance coverage and GPS navigation
• Bilingual customer support and route planning assistance
• Vehicle delivery and collection services
• Optional chauffeur services for extended packages

Vehicle availability is subject to reservation confirmation and may vary based on seasonal demand. We reserve the right to substitute vehicles with comparable models if the originally reserved vehicle becomes unavailable.

4. Rental Requirements

To rent a vehicle from Basalt, you must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Possess a valid driver's license recognized in Taiwan
• Provide valid identification (passport or Taiwan ID card)
• Have sufficient funds for rental payment and security deposit
• Provide accurate contact information for booking and support
• Accept liability for vehicle use during the rental period

International renters may need to provide an International Driving Permit alongside their home country license. Basalt reserves the right to refuse service if rental requirements are not met or if there are concerns about the renter's ability to operate the vehicle safely.

5. Booking and Reservations

Reservations can be made through our website contact form, email, or phone. All bookings are subject to vehicle availability and confirmation from Basalt. A rental agreement is formed once we send written confirmation of your reservation.

Reservation Changes

Changes to confirmed reservations (dates, vehicle type, pickup location) should be requested at least 48 hours before the scheduled pickup time. We will accommodate changes when possible, subject to availability. Changes requested within 48 hours may incur additional fees.

Cancellations

• Cancellations made more than 7 days before pickup: Full refund
• Cancellations made 3-7 days before pickup: 50% refund
• Cancellations made less than 3 days before pickup: No refund
• No-show reservations: No refund

6. Payment Terms

Rental fees are payable in New Taiwan Dollars (NT$). Accepted payment methods include credit cards, debit cards, and bank transfers. Full payment or a deposit may be required at the time of reservation.

Pricing

Quoted prices include comprehensive insurance, GPS navigation, and standard support services. Additional charges may apply for:

• Extra drivers (if applicable)
• Late return fees (NT$500 per hour beyond agreed return time)
• Fuel charges if vehicle is not returned with agreed fuel level
• Cleaning fees for excessive vehicle soiling
• Optional chauffeur services
• Traffic violations or parking fines incurred during rental period

Security Deposit

A refundable security deposit may be required and will be held until vehicle return and final inspection. The deposit will be refunded within 7 business days if no damages, violations, or additional charges are assessed.

7. Vehicle Use and Restrictions

Renters agree to:

• Operate the vehicle in accordance with Taiwan traffic laws and regulations
• Use the vehicle only for lawful purposes
• Not operate the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Not allow unauthorized drivers to operate the vehicle
• Not use the vehicle for commercial transport or racing
• Return the vehicle in the same condition as received, allowing for normal wear
• Report any accidents, damage, or mechanical issues immediately

Vehicles are suitable for paved roads and designated mountain routes. Off-road use or operation on unsuitable terrain may void insurance coverage and result in liability for damages.

8. Insurance and Liability

All rental packages include comprehensive insurance coverage meeting Taiwan's regulatory requirements. Coverage includes vehicle damage, third-party liability, and passenger protection.

Renter Responsibilities

Renters are responsible for:

• Any damage or loss resulting from prohibited use or negligence
• Deductible amounts specified in the rental agreement
• Costs exceeding insurance coverage limits
• Traffic violations, parking tickets, and toll charges

Accident Procedures

In the event of an accident, renters must immediately contact Basalt support and local authorities if required. Failure to report accidents or provide required documentation may affect insurance claims and result in renter liability for all damages.

9. Limitation of Liability

Basalt provides rental services "as is" and makes reasonable efforts to ensure vehicle safety and reliability. However, we are not liable for:

• Indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from vehicle use
• Trip delays, route disruptions, or missed destinations
• Personal injury or property damage beyond insurance coverage
• Loss of personal items left in vehicles
• Mechanical failures or maintenance issues occurring during use (we provide roadside assistance)

Our liability is limited to the rental fees paid for the affected reservation period. This limitation does not affect statutory rights under Taiwan consumer protection laws.

10. Intellectual Property

All content on the Basalt website, including text, graphics, logos, route itineraries, and geological information, is owned by Basalt or licensed for use. Renters receive a limited, non-transferable license to use provided materials solely for their rental period. Reproduction, distribution, or commercial use of our content without permission is prohibited.

11. Privacy and Data Protection

Personal information collected during the rental process is used for service delivery and handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy. We comply with Taiwan's Personal Data Protection Act and protect renter information with appropriate security measures.

12. Dispute Resolution

These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of Taiwan. Any disputes arising from rental agreements will be resolved through:

1. Informal negotiation between the parties
2. Mediation if negotiation is unsuccessful
3. Jurisdiction of Taiwan courts if mediation fails

Both parties agree to make reasonable efforts to resolve disputes amicably before pursuing formal legal action.

13. Force Majeure

Basalt is not liable for failure to perform obligations due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including natural disasters, severe weather, government restrictions, civil unrest, or other force majeure events. In such cases, we will work with renters to reschedule or provide refunds as appropriate.

14. Severability

If any provision of these Terms and Conditions is found to be unenforceable or invalid, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect. Invalid provisions will be replaced with valid terms that achieve the original intent as closely as possible.

15. Changes to Terms

Basalt reserves the right to modify these Terms and Conditions at any time. Changes will be effective immediately upon posting to our website with an updated "Effective Date." Continued use of our services after changes constitutes acceptance of modified terms. We recommend reviewing these terms periodically.
